Arthroscopic release of the frozen shoulder is associated with severe postoperative pain.Postoperative control of pain is critical for the maintenance of gains in motion after suchprocedure. In this study, we aimed to compare the perioperative analgesic effects ofinterscalene block with ropivacaine (in 20 patients) versus IV opioids (in another 20 patients),and the benefits of both on the postoperative outcome. We have found that patient-controlledinterscalene analgesia is safe and well tolerated, and reduces the need for IV narcotics whileallowing intensive passive range of motion therapy in the postoperative period.
