Abstract

The fifth edition of (WHO) semen analysis manual provides the lower reference limits of semen parameters. Several studies to assess the semen parameters among fertile men were conducted across the world and many studies have indicated geographical differences in semen quality. Until now Egyptian semen reference is not yet settled. The aim of this study is to determine the semen parameters of proven fertile males in Egypt. A total of 200 fertile men, whose wives were pregnant or delivered within one year at the time of semen collection, provided a semen sample each after sexual abstinence for 3 to 5 days and analyzed by computer assisted semen analysis (CASA). Results showed that semen quality of fertile Egyptian men is comparable to that of WHO (2010) regarding the mean values but variable regarding the fifth percentile as a lower limit for WHO (2010). The fifth percentile for sperm concentration was 15.26 million/ml which is slightly higher than WHO reference (15 million/ml), the fifth percentile for normal sperm morphology was equal to WHO (4%) but the fifth percentile for semen volume, total sperm count /ejaculate, total sperm motility, and progressive sperm motility (1.1 ml, 26.7 million/ejaculate, 23%, 12.8% respectively) were below WHO lower limit (WHO reference 1.5 ml, 39 million/ejaculate, 40%, 32% respectively). There is no significant difference in semen parameters between the age groups, (p-values is greater than 0.5). In conclusion, the reference ranges for semen variables among Egyptian population are coinciding with WHO (2010) parameters except for volume and motility. No significant correlation between semen parameters and age groups.Further studies on larger groups of fertile Egyptian males are needed to establish national parameters, however the current results may serve as a guidance values for future studies on semen quality in Egypt.
