BACKGROUND: Fat dissolution with injection lipolysis formulations has becomea popular technique for the treatment of localized fat accumulation and cellulite.Several open label clinical trials have shown a positive effect in reduction oflocalized fat with no definite comment on its safety.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of injection lipolysis as one ofthe therapeutic modalities in treatment of cellulite and localized fat depots .METHODS: Fifteen female patients with cellulite and bilateral localized fat depotsat the hip area were injected with 7.5 ml (375 mg) Phosphatidylcholine and 2.5 ml(0.25 mg) DMEA on each side. They received 2 sessions at intervals of 2 weeksapart and were followed up for 1 month Their serum lipids, liver and kidneyfunctions were measuresd at baseline and one week after each injection.RESULTS: Reduction of the baseline circumference in all patients gradually alongthe study interval with high statistical significance (P < 0.0001) at each point incomparison to the baseline was reported with no significant weight changes. Nochanges were reported in the liver functions (i.e. AST, Bilirubin, Albumin) at anypoint of evaluation apart from ALT values. ALT values initially increased at the 1streading and dropped at the 2nd reading but did not reach the baseline level. Nosignificant changes in the levels of creatinine and urea were reported at any point ofevaluation . All the values of the standard lipid profile; (Cholesterol, TGs, LDL)showed reduction at both evaluation times with the exception of HDL values thatshowed elevation at each point in comparison to the baseline.CONCLUSION:The results of this work, considers the injection lipolysis as a safe and effectivetreatment for localized fat deposits however, further studies on a bigger scale arerequired to establish the standards of the Injection lipolysis safety and practice.
