Objectives: Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgeries done nowadays using many surgical techniques. Recently, coblation technique for removing the tonsils provides promising results with better post-operative course. In this study we aim to compare between the conventional dissection technique and coblation in tonsillectomy as regards operative time, ease of the technique, intra-operative blood loss, post-operative pain and fever, swallowing, wound healing and incidence of complications. Methods: A prospective randomized study on 40 patients divided randomly into two equal groups to compare between both techniques. Results: A highly significant decrease in the intra-operative blood loss exists when using coblation than in dissection method. Coblation was as easy as the dissection technique but with relative prolonged operative time explained by the machine set-up. A highly significant difference (P<0.001) in the post-operative pain and fever was found after coblation than dissection method. More rapid recovery as regards return of normal swallowing and wound healing was found in the coblation group. There was no episodes of primary or secondary bleeding in either group. Conclusions: This new technique offers significant advantages in the intra-operative blood loss, post-operative pain and fever, swallowing and wound healing.
