Abstract

The use of heparin and aspirin can be utilized for prevention of first trimesteric abortion in cases of antiphospholipid syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus and inherited thrombophilias. This can be done by low dose aspirin (80 mg once daily) and unfractionated heparin (5000 units sudcutaniouse injection every 12 hours) with proper follow up of platelets count and APTT. However, the use of low molecular weight heparin is preferred due to better patient compliance due to less doses. The loss in lumbar spine bone mineral density due to long term use of low dose heparin is similar to that occurring physiologically during pregnancy
