During the last decade, the surgical use of alloplasts has become more and more widespread among otologists. Yet, based upon long-term clinical surveys and histologic finding, a debate has recently arisen about the biocompatibility and structural stability of these materials.Outcomes, the surgical results of ossicular chain reconstruction using a bioglass ceramic prosthesis were evaluated in 15 ears of 15 patients who were followed up for > 1 year, and the surgical results of mastoid obliteration after radical mastoidectomy using bioglass ceramics were evaluated in 15 cases who were followed up for one year.Successful reconstruction was defined as postoperative air-bone gap of ≤ 20dB. Success in hearing was obtained in 11/15 ears (73.3%) after 3 months and 9/11 ears (81.8%) at 18 months after exclusion of the missed cases and the cases who their prostheses were extruded. Extrusion of the prosthesis occurred in 3/15 ears (20%) after postoperative period of 18 months. The surgical results of the mastoid obliteration after one year using the bioglass ceramic showed that 11/15 patients (73.3%) had their ears dry and 12/15 ears (80%) showed stability of the material. The present results indicate that bioglass ceramic is a suitable material for middle ear surgery, although the incidence of extrusion is relatively high.
