Abstract

IGEs are common, easly controlled, easly aggravated epilepsies. It may need life long treatment, hence the importance of proper choic of AED according to seizure types and epilepsy syndrome, and side effect profile of the drug. This study was conducted on 225 patients with IGE : 103 patient with JME, 38 patients with CAE, 46 patients with JAE , 34 patients with EGTCSA , and 4 patients with MAE. Resuts : 67% of patients were controlled on monotherapy, 17% of patients were controlled on polytherapy, and 14% of patients were not controlled. 83% of JME patients, 88% of EGTCSA patients, 82% of CAE patients, 83% of JAE patients and all MAE patients were controlled. 15% of our patients had adult onset epilepsy. 29% of our patients had comorbid illness with epilepsy, with sleep disorders and headaches being the most frequently encountered comorbid disorders. Monotherapy was more associated with seizure control. VPA was the most commonly used drug, it was effective 84% of patient who used it. Low platelet count was more in patients using VPA polytherapy than those on VPA monotherapy. CNS side effects were more common in patient using VPA + ESX than those on VPA + LTG, or on VPA + CBZ. Conclusion : IGE were relatively of good prognoses using the suitable – mosltly broad spectrum – AEDs , mostly as a monotherapy with a small dose . IGE patients may present with the 1st seizure detected at adulthood, some of them have comorbid disorders other than epilepsy that need to be properly managed.
