Malnutrition is increasingly recognized as a complication of chronic liver disease (CLD). In children chronic liver disease is most commonly associated with cholestatic conditions such as biliary atresia. This study was conducted on 29 patients (15 male and 14 female) with extra-hepatic biliary atresia attending to the Hepatology clinic Cairo University Pediatric Hospital, indicated for Kasai operation and they were examined before Kasai operation and followed up 3 and 6 months after Kasai operation in the period of (May 2010 to September 2012) Patients were subjected to full history taking (urine color, stool color, history of itching . bleeding tendency, full nutritional history, family history of similar condition and positive consanguinity) ,complete examination ,laboratory investigations (CBC and LFTs) and anthropometric measurements were done for every case in the form of weight , height , weight for age ,height for age , weight-for-height , head circumference , skin fold thickness (mid arm circumference and triceps skin fold using Langue skin fold caliper). There was statistically significant decrease in (MAC, TSF, AFA, UAA , H.C) at 3 months and 6 months after Kaoperation compared to before Kasai operation . There was no statistically significant change in AMA and weight for height throughout the study.
