Abstract

Androgens are C-19 steroid hormones with androgenic andanabolic effects. Hyperandrogenism or androgen excess can occur due to overproduction of androgens from the ovaries (PCOS, tumours, stromal hyperthecosis, luteoma of pregnancy) or adrenal glands (congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing's syndrome, and androgens producing tumours). Drugs and other miscallaneous causes also play a role.Hyperandrogenism can present in many clinical syndromes. Theseinclude: ambiguous genitalia, abnormal sexual development anddifferentiation, abnormal puberty, anovulation and PCO, Hirsutism and disorders of menstruation. Laboratory evaluation consists of assays for the blood levels of these hormones treatment includes medical therapy to suppress abnormal ovarian or adrenal androgen production or medical therapy to block androgen offects at the end organ. Surgery may have a role in selected cases.
