Abstract

Ciliary body masses are usually missed during routine examination because they are hidden from view behind the iris and so can present when they are quite large. The ciliary body can be difficult to assess by conventional ultrasound because of its extreme anterior location and irregular surface contour. Ultrasound biomicroscopy can clearly define the entire ciliary body. It has a major role in detecting and following ciliary body masses. Optical coherence tomography is a high-resolution imaging modality that would be helpful in accurate localization of tumors of the ciliary body. The ocular endoscope produced a clear detailed image of the ciliary body in a state that is undisturbed by scleral depression. Transillumination can provide useful information but limitations of this examination should be taken into account.
