Abstract

Objectives: Analysis the expression of Bcl-2 in some malignant skin tumors including cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and malignant melanoma (MM). Material and methods: Thirty cases of skin tumors including 15 cases of basal cell carcinoma, 10 cases of squamous cell carcinoma and 5 cases of malignant melanoma were selected and were assessed for tumor site, histopathological types, tumor border, and degree of anaplasia, mitotic index and necrosis. Results: Expression of the Bcl-2 oncogene observed in all cases of BCC being greatest in aggressive growth tumors with infiltrating border and less in the indolent growth tumors with expanding border. Weak Bcl-2 expression was observed in 2 cases of SCC and good expression in cases of MM. This positive Bcl-2 expression in these tumors was statistically significant (P = 0.002). Positive Bcl-2 immunoreactivity was correlated with the degree of anaplasia being statistically significant (P = 0.029).Conclusions and recommendations: Bcl-2 immunostaining is an easy reliable tumor marker for detection of aggressiveness of skin tumors.
