Over the last 20 years significant advances have been made in our understanding of the natural history of pre-TIDM, which has enabled the conduct of studies aimed at preventing the disease. Initial strategies in the 1980s involved the administration of non-specific immunosuppression to new onset patients in an effort to preserve beta cell function. In the 90s, the emphasis switched to preventative strategies targeting potential immune responses specifically related to beta cell destruction.
