Abstract
Haemodialysis patients are at high risk of oxidative stress. Such oxidative stress is an important risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic cardio-vascular diseases. Vitamin E is the most important antioxidant that protects the cells against harm from oxygen free radicals and lipid peroxides. In our study, we estimated the level of Vit. E in 17 HD patients compared with 8 healthy controls and we found that there was marked deficiency in the level of Vit. E in HD group. This was associated with significant hypo-albuminemia and hypocholesterolemia denoting malnutrition. We hypothesized that this is related to dietary protein restriction, co-morbid chronic inflammatory conditions and dialysis procedure itself.
