Abstract

The erbium : YAG laser is a solid-state laser (wavelength 2.94 mum) that means compact size and durability. It is a multipurpose device suited for use in anterior and posterior segment surgeries in addition to oculoplastic and refractive surgeries. PRK, PTK and keratoplasty trephination can be safely and efficiently done on clinical basis.Sclerostomies have been successfully created with the erbium : YAG laser. Laser energy can be delivered ab externo, under a conjunctival flap, ab interno through a paracentesis or through a goniolens by contact and noncontact procedures. Laser in cataract has its place. Nearly all types of cataract are amenable to phacoemulsification can be fragmented by Er : YAG laser.Erbium laser technology may ultimately allow surgeons to perform cataract extraction entirely within the endocapsular envelope through a small opening and implantation of elastic injectable intraocular lens material
