Abstract

Reconstruction of the facial defects has always been a difficult problem because of the limited availability of local tissues and donor site morbidity.Facial defects that need reconstruction may be the result of post burn deformity, postoperative, posttraumatic and congenital diseases. In this essay, the anatomy of the face and its aesthetic components, the etiology of facial defects and different techniques used or their reconstruction by cheek flaps were reviewed.Local and regional cheek flaps are the ideal method for reconstruction of facial defects because they give an excellent color and texture match.Cheek flaps are used in reconstruction of lower eyelid, nose, upper and lower lip, cheek and oral and oropharyngeal defects by using varieties of cheek rotation flaps, nasolabial flaps. Advancement laps, subcutaneous pedicle flaps transposition flaps and cheek island flaps.
