Pure fibrin or erythrocyte / fibrin clots contribute to the morbidity of several ophthalmic conditions as its formation is a potentially serious complication whether in the anterior segment or posterior segment. Anterior segment fibrin formation can cause failure of glaucoma filtering surgery and failure of cataract surgery, while posterior segment fibrin formation can cause retinal detachment. Fortunately, fibrinolytic drugs have been shown to be helpful in the management of fibrin formation. Other potential applications are hyphema, postvitrectomy fibrin formation, preretinal hemorrhage, subretinal hemorrhage, retinal arterial and venous obstructive diseases, and vitreous hemorrhage.
