Preconception care is the care of women of reproductive age before first pregnancy or between pregnancies, to ensure that conditions and behaviours which may pose a risk to mothers and infants are identified and are managed when possible. In Egypt preconception care is introduced through the mandatory premarital examination, in order to have comprehensive reproductive health program. Since August 2008 and according to child law no.126 marriage certificates are not documented except after medical examination for couples wishing to marry with minimum age for both is 18 years old.The purpose of this study is to identify some apparent health conditions of females attending premarital clinics that may affect their health and future outcome, and to assess their nutritional status. Through these two main objectives exploring participants' knowledge and opinion regarding important topics was aimed for. This is cross-sectional study done in three premarital clinics in family medicine centres, the study sample was all none previously married females attending premarital examination three days a week from 9 am-12 pm, they were submitted to personal interview, during it participants were asked to fulfil questionnaire including food frequency sheet. Two hundred fifty three girls agreed to participate, starting January 2011 up to June 2011. Appropriate statistical methods of analysis were applied.Results of this study demonstrated that El-Ma'azon was the main source for announcement about the inevitability of premarital examination 92%, only 13% had proper knowledge as regard premarital examination. As for their health condition; 4.3% with history of hypertension, 1.6% with history of rheumatic heart disease, and 3.6% were prediabetic, as for their nutritional condition, 38% were anaemic, 31.2%, 11.5% were overweight and obese respectively , 43% eat less than 3 meals a day , 39% drink less than 6 water cups a day and 83% don’t know folic acid. Recommendations were presented to vitalize role of premarital care relating to pregnancy outcome and the importance of raising the awareness level of young people to accept premarital examination and to get the maximum benefit of this golden chance as a part of preconception care.
