No perfect therapy exist for POAG, so one most aimat controlling the disease rather than curing it. The goal ofthe treatment is to preserve good visual function for thepatient's life time. This is accomplished by lowering IOP(until a better treatment comes along) to a level that willstop, or at least slow the progression of optic nerve damageand it's subsequent vision loss. The treatment shouldmaximize good visual functions and comfort, as well aspreserve a reasonable quality of life for the patient byminimizing the risk of vision loss from the treatment itselfand significant side effect.Surgery remains a good therapeutic option for thepatients with disease progression at a rate likely to causesignificant functional loss of vision in their life.
