Abstract

Aim of our work is to evaluate the latissimus dorsi flap after wide local excision in early cases of breast cancer, including cosmetic and oncological evaluation Material & Methods: Thirty patients with early breast cancer were selected for this study for which wide local excision and axillary clearance was followed by reconstruction of the resulting breast defect with latissimus dorsi flap “latissimus dorsi miniflap”. Patients were followed up for at least 3 months to detect any complications or recurrences. Results: The age of the patients ranged from 27 to 63 years with a mean of 45.6 years. The tumour-free margin ranged from 9 to 21 mm with a mean of 15 mm. The overall patient satisfaction showed 76.7 % were satisfied and 23.3 % were unsatisfied. The aesthetic grading assessment showed excellent results in 53.3 %, good results in 30 % and fair results in 16.7 %. There were no major complications or deaths. 36.7 % of patients developed seromas. Conclusion: latissimus dorsi mini-flap is simple and effective method. Breast conservation surgery does often leave a significant deformity which can best be corrected by an immediate latissimus dorsi miniflap reconstruction.
