Most of patients with HCC are diagnosed at a late stage. Therefore, the prognosis of HCC patients is generally very poor. Alpha-fetoprotein has been widely used, but its sensitivity has not been satisfactory, in addition to its non-specific elevation in non malignant hepatic diseases. Glypican 3, this protein (GPC3) is over-expressed in HCC, and not in normal hepatocytes and non-malignant liver disease. We studied Glypican 3 gene expression in liver biopsies by real time PCR. The study included 29 patients aged between 32 years and 70 years 21 with known history of HCC and 8 patients with cirrhosis. Conclusion: Glypican 3 is over-expressed uniquely in HCC.
