Abstract

Aim of work: to find the influence of women genital image on female sexual function in women with female genital mutilation (FGM).Patients and Methods: one hundred sexually active women victim of FGM and one hundred sexually active women without FGM attending the outpatient clinic of gynaecology and obstetrics at Kasr El Aini University Hospitals School of Medicine, Cairo University.Tools: women with and without FGM were asked to answer the Arabic-translated version of the female sexual function index (FSFI) questionnaire and female genital image scale (FGSIS)Results: The 2 groups were comparable in demographic characteristics. There were no statistically significant differences between the 2 groups in means of origin (p0.075).However, there were statistically significant differences between the 2 groups in their scores for age (p0.0095) and education level (p0.001).A statistically significant difference between the 2 groups in means of FSFI (p 0.0322) and FGSIS (p 0.0132).A statistically significant positive correlation between FSFI & FGSIS (p0.0258) and a statistically significant difference between circumcision and FGSIS was found (p0.015)Conclusion: The Female genital self image scale is a reliable and valid measure and future research should examine its psychometric properties in diverse samples to better understand its possible uses as well as the relationship between genital self-image and sexual function.Sexual function in women with female genital mutilation is adversely altered. This complication and other well-known health consequences of FGM should be documented and violence against young girls should be totally abandoned.
