Abstract

Interconception care is a chance to promote the health and nutritional status of the mothers and to identify risks both for the mother and the future children, and appropriately deal with them. The aim of this work was to improve the health of the mothers and children through providing interconception care to the mothers attending with their children for vaccination at the second, fourth and six months. Our study is an intervention research conducted over a period of six months. It included 75 cases in the family health unit ( FHU ) of Heit village, Menofeya Governate . Mothers attended with their infants for vaccination at the age of two, four and six months. Intervention activities included health education regarding breastfeeding and weaning, nutrition, contraception and child spacing and smoking. In addition iron supplementations were provided for free. We found that exclusive breastfeeding was improved in mothers who received health education. A great improvement in haemoglobin ( Hb ) level in mothers attending three visits, 81.5 % were anaemic in the first visit decreased to only 7.4 % in the third visit. The weight and nutritional status of mothers improved between the first and third visits. The use of a contraceptive method increased and there was a shift from inappropriate method to a lactation friendly method. Passive smoking was practiced by about 40 % of mothers coming at the age of two months improved to about 7 % at the age of six months. We concluded that interncnception care greatly affects the health of the mothers and their children. It is recommended to include interconception care for all mothers attending with their infants in the first year of life.
