Granulomatous mastitis is a rare benign chronic inflammatory disease of the breast which can mimic breast carcinoma. It was first described by Kessler and Wolloch in 1972. It is often misdiagnosed and mistreated. It presents as inflammatory lesion of uncertain etiology and pathogenesis thus resulting in both bad cosmetic outcome and poor cure rates. Many treatment approaches were described including surgery, anti-inflammatory medications, repeated ultrasound guided drainage and corticosteroids. Aim of the study was to discuss in details granulomatous mastitis and different treatment modalities. Patients & Methods: all patients with GM who presented to Breast Cancer Clinic at the department of surgery, Kasr Al Aliny University hospital, Cairo, Egypt between 10/2007 till 10/2012 were completely reviewed. Their files were evaluated and all data was carefully analyzed to review relevant cases. Results: the conservative management in the form of close follow up and medical treatment as well as minimal surgical interfeance can give better cosmetic results and higher cure rates. Conclusion: GM is a benign inflammatory breast disease, which is usually misdiagnosed and mistreated however we believe that any breast inflammation not related to the perilactational period is IGM until proven otherwise.
