Abstract

Background : Thyroid swellings is a wide spread surgical disease in almost all surgical wards in which pathological surprises are present. Color duplex is available radiological investigation that can be integrated into the management of goiter. Patients and Methods: This prospective study was carried out on 30 patients presenting with goitre at the surgical departments of Kasr El Ainy Hospital. Application of colour duplex to thyroid nodules classifying them as non vascular, central, prephiral and mixed vascularity .the Resistive index (RI) which is the measurement of resistance to arterial flow and is calculated from the power Doppler arterial waveform.RI = (peak systolic velocity - end diastolic velocity) / peak systolic velocity will be analyzed to reach a cut off distinguishing between benign from malignant pathology. Results: Based on this study and statistical analysis there is no definite relationship between pattern of vascularity and pathology and there is high significant relationship between mean resistive index and pathology. Data revealed that cut off value = 0.705 with sensitivity and specificity of 100%. Conclusion: Application of colour duplex as a diagnostic tool in management of goiter can help in decreasing pathological surprises in goiter.
