Maternal anemia is a common problem in pregnancy, particularly in developing countries. Perinatal risks include preterm delivery, low birth weight and low Apgar score.Early neonatal assessment usually consists of:1. Apgar score.2. Time to sustained respiration (TSR).3. Biochemical status.4. Neurobehavioral testing (usually for research purposes). Methods: 43 pregnant ladies attending the labor ward for delivery blood samples were taken for hemoglobin and random blood sugar analysis. Also, umbilical cord sampling were taken for hemoglobin, random blood sugar and umbilical cord blood gases. Results: 5 cases had normal hemoglobin levels 30 cases range from mild to moderate degrees of anemia and 7cases had severe degree of anemia. Maternal random blood sugar at admission was within normal to all cases but 4 cases show mild hypoglycemia at the 2nd stage of labor. Fetal data show a hemoglobin levels range from 14.2 to 18.1gm/dl. Fetal weight was within normal levels, also placental weight. Fetal pH range from 7.33 to 7.45. Also, fetal HCO3 range from 14.6 to 27.3. 3 cases have low Apgar score at one minute but all had normal Apgar score at 5 minutes.Discussion: significant correlation between maternal haemoglobin levels and foetal haemoglobin was found. Also, there is strong correlation between Apgar scores and pH. No significant correlation between glucose 5% infusion during labor and cord blood acid–base balance was found.
