The underlying causes of childhood asthma are still not fully understood. Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae are suspected causes of acute exacerbation of asthma. The present study aimed at exploring the relationship between Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Chlamydia pneumoniae infections and acute exacerbations in Egyptian children with asthma. This cross-sectional study included 80 Egyptian acute asthmatic children 2-12 years of age. Venous blood samples were obtained and tested for recent Mycoplasma and Chlamydia infections. The study found the following: Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections in acute asthmatic children in Egypt was relatively high (46.25%). Chlamydia pneumoniae infections in acute asthmatic children in Egypt were low (1.25%). Mycoplasma and Chlamydia infections were not affected by age, sex, residence or histories of acute asthmatic children. In addition, both infections did not correlate with severity of acute asthma attack. The study concluded that Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections are present in a significant proportion of acute asthmatic children in Egypt, and that this does not apply to Chlamydia pneumoniae infections.
