It is well known that type 1 diabetes often occurs in association with any number of other autoimmune disease, with autoimmune thyroid disease being the common example. Our study was carried out on 52 type 1 diabetes, age range 6-18.3 years, diabetes duration range 1-14 years, with positive consanguinity in 18, positive family history of autoummune disease in 14; goiter was in 18 and sings of other autoimmune disease in 2 patients. Thyroid autoimmunity was found in 12 (23%) 2 with clinical hypothyroidism. Thyroid autoimmunity related to positive consanguinity and positive family history of autoimmune disease but not related to age, duration of diabetes or glycated hemoglobin.
