The major function of the upper limb is to move and support the hand in the space around the body during all activities. The mobility of the shoulder joint allows a wide arc for the basic limb direction, but it is the elbow which must flex and extend through large ranges of motion to control the distance of the hand from the body such as in reaching for objects or bringing food to the mouth. The function of the elbow is complicated by the need to accommodate forearm rotation, the hand being pronated to pick up an object and supinated to receive an object or to bring it to the mouth. The elbow replacement has now become a standard orthopedic operation. It’s regularly used for rheumatoid arthritis and for some cases of posttraumatic arthritis.
