Abstract
In a trial to assess the significance of HCV sexual transmission, this study included fifty chronic HCV patients and their wives. All husbands were proved to be HCV serum-positive by PCR. Nested PCR was used to detect HCV-RNA in semen, while third generation ELISA was used to detect HCV-Ab in wives’ serum. HCV-RNA was detected in semen of 33 cases (66%). HCV-Ab was detected in serum of (30.3%) of wives married to positive husbands compared to (5.8%) of wives married to negative husbands (P Value = 0.0483). Marriage mean duration for positive wives was (15.9) years compared to (4.4) years for negative wives (P Value <0.0001).
