Personality profile, anxiety and sexual satisfaction : A comparison between implanted penile prosthesis and intracorporeal injection

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the personality profile, anxiety, and sexual satisfaction in patients with implanted penile prosthesis and those on Intracorporeal Injection (ICI) home therapy.Methods: This is a cross section case control study, a total of 40 male patients complaining of erectile dysfunction followed at the Andrology and STDs out patient clinic Kasr Eleini Hospital were recruited to participate in the study. The sample is divided into two groups. Group (1) includes 20 patients managed by Intracorporeal Injection (ICI) as a home therapy for minimum of two months of regular sexual practice. Group (2) includes 20 patients who have implanted penile prosthesis for minimum of two months of regular sexual practice. The total of 40 male patients complained of (ED) and treated by ICI and penile prosthesis were applied to the following questionnaires: Beck Anxiety Scale, Eysenck Personality Questionnaire to assess, Sexual Satisfaction Scale, and International Index of Erectile Function Questionnaire (IIEF-5).Results: Statistically, results for Beck Anxiety Scale, significant difference was found (P = 0.000). Results for Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, no significant difference was found in Psychoticism (P) (P = 0.056), no statistically significant difference was found in Neuroticism (N) (P= 0.169), no statistically significant difference was found in Extraversion (E) (P= 0.225), no statistically significant difference was found in Lie scale (L) (P= 0.159), and no statistically significant difference was found in Criminality (C) (P= 0.378). Results for Sexual Satisfaction Scale, significant difference was found (P = 0.013). Results for International Index of Erectile Function Questionnaire (IIEF-5), significant difference was found (P = 0.000).Conclusion: We concluded that anxiety is lower in patients underwent penile prosthesis therapy comparing to patients underwent ICI home therapy. While no significant difference were found when comparing personality profile five dimensions Psychoticism (P), Neuroticism (N), Extraversion (E), Lie scale (L) and Criminality (C). Sexual satisfaction and erectile function were significantly better results in patients underwent penile prosthesis therapy comparing to patients underwent ICI home therapy.
