Interleukin-6 is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a central role in the acute phase of inflammation seen after infection. The present study involved 65 patients suffering from infection of postoperative wounds, burn wounds & diabetic foot, as well as, 10 healthy volunteers as control. Bacteriological examination of the infected wounds reveal that S. aureus was the most common Gram-positive isolate (23.1%), while Ps. aeruginosa was the most common Gram-negative isolate (21.7%). Serum IL-6 level was elevated in all patients with infected wounds regardless the type of wound or the causative organisms.
