Abstract

Type II diabetes mellitus is considered as one of the majormetabolic diseases of twenty first century. Characterized by alteration inthe carbohydrate, fat, protein metabolism. Obesity can affect beta celldirectly through influence of free fatty acid (lipotoxicity), or remotelythrough group of cytokines secreted by adipose tissue (adipokines).Visfatin (pre B cell colony enhancing factor) is a novel adipokine thatappears to be produced by visceral adipose tissue and has insulin mimeticactions. Both its tissue expression and secreted plasma levels increase inparallel with obesity.
