In a trial to categorize the different types of anemia in children we estimated serum ferritin, sTFR and sTFR-F index in two groups of children suffering from two types of anemia (IDA and -thalassemia (major and minor)) in addition to the control group. It was recorded that serum ferritin mean level in Thalassemia major and minor was significantly increased when compared to the control group.sTFR was found to be elevated in Thalassemia & IDA, with statistically significant difference between IDA & Thalassemia major. No statistically significant difference was found between IDA & Thalassemia minor.sTFR-F index was different in all groups. Both sTFR & its index were able to diagnose IDA with the highest sensitivity & specificity.Serum ferritin was the best in the differentiation between IDA & Thalassemia minor.
