This study attempted by including 60 women between 38 and 41 weeks gestation in Kasr El Eini Maternity Hospital of and subdivided into two groups each one comprised 30 women. The first group received 0.5mg ergometrine plus 5IU oxytocis IM and the second group received 100μg of carbetocin IV over one min. The drugs were given immediately after fetal delivery. The aim of study is to evaluate the effect of carbetocin in preventing postpartum haemorrhage after vaginal delivery in comparison with syntometrine. The results showed that carbetocin is more effective, with significant difference, in reducing the time of 3rd stage of labour, reducing amount of blood loss and drop of both HB% and hematocrite levels with highly significant decreased incidence.
