This study was conducted on 77 subjects 40 males and 37 females divided into four age groups. Upper endoscopy was done for all subjects and multiple biopsies were taken from the stomach. All biopsies were studied for the histopathological changes and the presence of Helicobacter pylori. Gastric acid secretion was studied by assessing the pH of aspirated fasting gastric juice. The study showed a decline in acid secretion with age associated with the presence of atrophic changes in the gastric mucosa that was not related to the presence of Helicobacter pylori and may be due to the vascular changes associated with advancing age in the blood vessels supplying the gastric mucosa.
