Abstract

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is one of the most common causes of visual loss in patients with diabetes. The most efficient tool for preventing vision loss from DR is screening and identification of at-risk patients. The gold standard treatment in recent decades has been macular laser photocoagulation, which reduces the risk of moderate visual loss by approximately 50%. In recent years, alternative or adjunct treatments for DME have been studied such as intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) and therapies using inhibitors of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
