The anatomy of the portal vein is divided into 5 main anatomical variants. Multislice CT can accurately assess the variant portal anatomy preoperatively in the donor which is essential for surgical planning. We studied the variant portal vein anatomy in 31 potential donors for living donor liver transplantation and we found the prevalence of anatomic variants to be 23 % of the sample with the regular bifurcation type being 77 %.
