Abstract
Misoprostol is one of prostaglandin analogues which have multiple uses and multiple effects. Misoprostol increases uterine tone activity, used successfully for induction of abortion. Sublingual misoprostol provides a new route for medical abortion with high success rate, and vaginal route of administration has long lasting contractility than oral. Best results of abortion were obtained when misoprostol was used in 800 g dose administered vaginally after 100 mg of oral mifepristone. Misoprostol in a dose of 25 g given vaginally can induce labor safely and effectively with least side effects if used every 4 hours. Extraamniotic saline infusion with concomitant oxytocin appears more effective and safer for labor induction than misoprostol only regimen. Titrated misoprostol is a new approach to decrease the incidence of abnormal uterine action occurring with misoprostol in labor induction and is more economic than dinoprostone. Misoprostol used mainly before operative and diagnostic hysteroscopy as a cervical priming agent to reduce its complications especially in post-menopausal women
