Abstract

Tumors of the scapula present with pain, mass or both and they may become quite large before they are brought to attention. The most common primary malignancy of the scapula is the chondrosarcoma. The most common malignant scapular tumor in children is Ewing's sarcoma. Soft-tissue sarcomas may involve the suprascapular or the infraspinous musculature and, secondary, scapula. A CT scan and MRI are the most valuable means of determining the size and extent of the extraosseous disease and its relationship to the chest wall, whereas arteriography is important to determine vascular involvement. Bone scan may show ribs involvement or proximal humeral extension. The biopsy site is a crucial factor in determining the final operative procedure. Treatment of some scapular tumors includes radiation therapy in conjunction with chemotherapy. Surgical option plays an important role in treatment of Scapular tumors. Extension to neighboring structures is the important complications of the scapular tumors.
