The purpose of the present study is to clarify the relation between intimamediathickness as a predictor of atherosclerosis in diabetic patients in hypertensivesversus non-hypertensive.The study included 64 subjects who were divided into 3 groups: 1st groupincluded 32 diabetic hypertensive patients with a mean age of 56.4±9.4 years, 2ndgroup included 22 diabetic non-hypertensive patients with a mean age of 50.6±17.3.All patients did not suffer from hepatic affection, renal impairment, urinary tractinfection, cerebrovascular stroke or ischaemic heart disease. The 3rd group included10 healthy age and sex matced control subjects with a mean age of 52±7.1 years. For all participants, blood pressure electrocardiogram, fasting plasma glucose,2-hour post-prandial plasma glucose, serum triglycerides, serum total cholesterol,HDL and LDL cholesterol (after fasting for 12 hours), of blood urea and serumcreatinine were assessed. Moreover, serum fasting insulin was done for 20 patients. In addition, colour-coded duplex Doppler study of both intima-media thickness(IMT) of both carotid arteries was done with estimation of the main IMT and thepresence of plaques.
