Uterine leiomyomata are benign tumors of the uterus made up of smooth muscle and the extracellular matrix proteins collagen and elastin. They are common, the incidence of fibroids in women aged twenty five to forty five is approximately thirty percent. Uterine myomas when asymptomatic do not need any treatment, when symptomatic, they may be treated in a variety of ways ranging from expectant observation to medical or surgical treatment. Surgery has been the mainstay of fibroid treatment, and various minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic management, uterine artery embolization, uterine fibroid embolization, laser myomectomy, medical treatment, and gene therapy have been developed in addition to hysterectomy and myomectomy.
