Hepatitis A virus infection is a world wide public health problem and commonly found in many developing countries. In the current retrospective study of 360 new cases of acute hepatitis A infection, attending the hepatology clinic at new children hospital, Cairo University, all new patients were studied starting from January 2000 till the end of December 2000. All cases were studied regarding the natural history of disease. It was found that dark urine and jaundice were the most prevalent symptoms in 95.2% of patients. Organomegally was present in 58.3 % of patients. The mean ALT level was 337.5 and the mean duration of normalization was about 50 days. Only 7 cases were admitted to hospital. Only 2 cases had acute HAV on top of chronic liver disease. We concluded that hepatitis A is usually a benign disease of children with small percent of complications and with a family spread so proper health education of family is advised.
