Abstract

The aim of this work is to determine the prevalence of hepatitis B&C viruses among cholestatic infants in which the vertical transmission is one of the main causes of infection. This study included 44 infants with cholestasis. (16%) males and (39%) females. Their ages ranged from 1-6 months, they were chosen among the attendants at the out-patient Hepatology Clinic, New Children Hospital, Cairo University. 12 normal infant have been chosen as a control group. The results showed that 8 only were found positive for HCV Ab, and only one case among the eight was found positive for HCV RNA by PCR. All their mothers had HCV Ab in their sera, but 3 mothers only were HCV RNA positive by PCR. It was also found that 2 other cases had HBs Ag in their sera and were born to HBs Ag positive mothers. In healthy control infants and mothers, we found that 2 out of 12 infants (17%) had positive HCV antibody in their sera. 3 of the 12 mothers (25%) were also HCV Ab positive. But none of the 12 infants was infected by HBV. Vertical transmission is now the most common route of HCV infection in paediatric age.
