The present study was conducted at Shawesh Family Health Unit which is located in Ehnasya district, in Beni-Seuf governorate. The study was descriptive, cross sectional and conducted to determine the rate of referred cases in a family practice unit in Beni-Suef, to detect compliance of the family practice center in Beni-Suef to the pre-set referral process guidelines, to assess customers' satisfaction with the referral process, to assess health care providers' satisfaction with the referral process and to develop recommendations to improve quality of the referral process. This done by reviewing forms and records of referred cases, assessment of health team role in the referral system, assessment of patients' satisfaction about referral system and in-depth interviews with health providers. The findings in the current study showed that, referral rate was 12%, compliance of patients to referral system was very weak, patient satisfaction to external referral was low 8%, returned referral letters from the hospital-feedback-was only 3%, no annual clear training plan for health care providers, main departments for referral were pediatric 56% and internal medicine 15%. The study recommendations were to increase the awareness of health care providers, availability of forms & records in the FHU, to regularly assess referral forms, to train the health team and continuous monitoring and evaluation of the system.
