Abstract

Stress related hematemesis is one of the common complications incritically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit, the scoringsystems that have been developed as scales for evaluation of ICUs’function are helpful tools assisting basic decision making and furtherplanning for progression and PRISM-III is one of the best-known scoringsystems for assessment of PICU performance ,this study done on allchildren admitted to the PICU of New Children University Hospital(Abo El riesh , El Mounira ), over a period of 6 months from June 2012 toNovember 2012 , and 135 patients were included in this study aiming toset a cut off point of PRISM III score in which we can predict stresshematemesis before its occurrence ,and we found that 60% of cases withPRISM III score more than or equal 7 had stress GI bleeding while only8.5% of cases with PRISM III score less than 7 had stress GI bleeding, also there was a statistically significant correlation between stress GIbleeding and mortality as 82% of cases who had stress related GIbleeding died.
