Abstract

Aims: To assess the value of hip arthrography in planning definitive treatment for children with hip problem. Background: It is sometimes unclear whether children with hip problems as DDH, Perthes' disease and status post septic arthritis of the hip (SAH) need an operation. Hip arthrography draws the true outlines of the hip joint declaring the actual relationship between the femoral head and the acetabulum. Methods: Fifteen hips in fourteen patients, six hips of healed septic arthritis of the hip, eight cases of developmental dysplasia of the hip, and one case of Perthes' disease. Using the anterior approach standard arthrograms was performed, then the data was interpreted to show how the arthrograms helped in decision making. Results: In the group of post septic arthritis of the hip the decision changed in five cases out of six cases, in the group of developmental dysplasia of the hip the decision changed in four cases out of eight cases, and in the case of Perthes' disease the decision remained unchanged. Conclusion: Hip arthrography is a useful preoperative planning tool, as it helps modification of plans of treatment.
