Abstract

Behcet’s disease is a multisystem inflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent oral aphthous ulcers, genital ulcers, uveitis. The cause of Behcet’s disease remains unknown, but epidemiologic findings suggest that an autoimmune process is triggered by an infectious or environmental agent .The target tissue seems to be the small blood vessels, with various consequences of either vasculitis and/or thrombosis. Our aim of the work was to detect the prevalence of hepatitis B and Cviruses in Behcet patients and to detect the relation between them. The study included seventy five patients with Behcet disease, in addition to seventy five control subjects who were age and sex matched. Full medical history ,complete physical examination and some laboratory testes including of CBC, ESR, C-Reactive protein, renal and liver function tests .Also serological markers (IgM) and (IgG) of hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus were done for all patients and control subjects. The percentage of Behcet patients with positive HBsAg was (41.3%) ,The percentage of Behcet patients with positive HBc IgM Ab was (2.7%) ,The percentage of Behcet patients with positive HBc total Ab cases is (24%) which was statistically highly significant (P-value 0.008). While the percentage of Behcet patients with positive HCV Ab was (13.3%)which was statistically non significant. The prevalence of HBV and HCV infections were not significantly different between Behcet diseased patients and healthy controls
