Abstract

In this study, we were aiming at documentation of the differentanterior segment pathological entities in pediatric age group, those weredetected by UBM. We used a 50 MHz frequency ultrasonic probe. The studyincluded 206 cases of different pathologies and ages ranging from 4 monthsto 11 years, all are referred from Abu-El Reesh Pediatric Hospital toOphthalmic Laser Unit, Cairo University in the period from 1/10/2001 to31/10/2005. Results were categorized according to their pathological entitiesinto congenital, inflammatory, post-traumatic and post-surgical. UBM wasvaluable in diagnosis of the accurate pathology in cases of congenitalcorneal opacity which may change the surgical decision in some cases.Different forms of anterior segment dysgenesis, special rare cases assclerocornea with congenital aphakia and typical angle pathology in primarycongenital glaucoma could be identified. Inflammatory conditions asgranuloma were presented. Post traumatic evaluation with UBM wasinformative in showing the site and extent of damage, documentation of thepresence of intra-ocular foreign body and its site. An intra-ocular granulomawith foreign body could only be identified with UBM. In follow up ofsurgeries, UBM was valuable in assessment of the position of the IOL,detection of the presence of multiple IOLs (piggy bag), evaluation offiltering blebs and glaucoma valves.
