Abstract

This work was carried out on 126 adult male albino rats. The animals were divided into 4 groups. Group I served as control, group II and group III received the tested drugs rosiglitazone and telmisartan orally daily in doses of 0.5 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg, respectively for eight weeks. Group IV received a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin in a dose of 40 mg/kg and served as a model of nephropathy. Rosiglitazone and telmisartan were given orally in the previous daily specified doses to rats in groups IV-A, IV-B for eight weeks respectively. In group IV-C the nephropathic rats received both tested drugs together. Venous blood samples were taken from animals of all groups after two, four and eight weeks. The blood samples were analyzed biochemically for the measurement of serum level of glucose sodium, potassium, urea, creatinine, total protein, albumin, total triglyceride and total cholesterol. Also, urine analysis was done to the treated and non-treated nephropathic rats for the measurement of urine concentration of sodium, potassium, urea, creatinine, albumin and total protein. At the end of the experiment, four animals from each group were sacrificed and their kidneys were taken and prepared for the histopathological examination.
