Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the sources of stress amongmedical students at Faculty of Medicine- Cairo University,symptoms of stress, the stress levels and the coping strategies theyused to overcome these stresses. The study also compared betweenacademic and clinical groups and between male and female students.This is a cross sectional study with an analytical component where indepth interviews were hold with about 30 students from differentscholastic years including both male and females, each interviewlasted for about one and half up to two hours. A self administeredArabic questionnaire was used among 400 students from differentscholastic years. The study found that the studying sources of stressand sources of stress in faculty were the most common source ofstress. The five most frequently reported stressors, annoyance as thepractical training is not enough, annoyance as the curriculum is longand containing many unimportant details, annoyance as they cannotmake their hobbies, annoyance as the professors distinguish betweenstudents and doctors sons, and annoyance as they gain no benefitfrom lectures in that order. It is clear from the results of this studythat medical students at Faculty of Medicine- Cairo University wereexposed to a variety of interpersonal and environmental stressors.These findings indicate the need for stress management programsspecific to the needs of college students.
